The Austrian scientist Karl Landsteiner, having mixed the blood serum of some individuals with RBCs taken from other individuals, found out that in some combinations of RBCs and blood serums there occurred agglutination, and in the other combinations no agglutination was observed. Exploring the structure of red blood cells, Landsteiner found out the peculiar substances. He divided them into two categories, A and B, and separated out the third one which contained RBCs that reacted as if they lacked the properties of A and B. Later, his pupils - A. von Decastello and A. Sturle discovered RBCs, which expressed both A and B antigens at the same time. As a result of this research blood group system appeared and was named AB0. We use this system so far.

II ( А ) – blood group, which is marked by the occurrence of the A antigen;
III ( АВ ) – blood group, which is marked by the occurrence of the B antigen;
IV( АВ ) – blood group, which is marked by the occurrence of both A and B antigens.

ABO system is the only one hereditary blood group system, since the antibodies are formed during the prenatal period of fetation. Other systems are based on the antibodies which are generated as a result of vital activity: mismatched blood transfusion or Hemolytic disease of the newborn, that`s why they are called acquired.

The theory of compatibility of AB0 blood groups appeared at the dawn of blood transfusion, during the Great Patriotic War, when there was a disastrous shortage of donor blood. Donors and recipients must have compatible blood groups. In the middle of XXth century it was assumed that type O negative blood is compatible with any other groups. Individuals with type O negative blood were suggested to be universal donors; their blood could be transfused to any person who needed it. The table below illustrates the compatibility by blood groups (X sign marks compatible combinations). For example, a group A(II)Rh- individual can receive blood only from individuals of groups 0(I)Rh- or A(II)Rh (with A being preferable), and can donate blood to individuals with type AB(IV)Rh+, AB(IV)Rh-, A(II)Rh+ or A(II)Rh-.

Rh-negative child birth in a family with Rh-positive parents at best arouses deep bewilderment, at worst - distrust: reproaches and doubts as to the spouse`s fidelity. Curiously enough, but it`s not an exceptional case. There is a plain explanation for such a delicate problem.
Rhesus-factor is lipoprotein, which is on the RBCs membranes. 85% of people have it (they`re considered Rh-positive). People, who don`t have it, are Rh-negative. For Rh-analyses only one pair of genes is examined.
Rh-positive factor is marked as DD or Dd, it is a dominant character; Rh-negative - dd - is recessive. A couple with Rh- heterozygous factor (Dd) may have Rh-positive child in 75% and Rh-negative in 25%. Parents: Dd x Dd. Children: DD, Dd, dd. Heterozygosis emerges as a result of rhesus baby birth from rhesus negative mother and may be preserved in genes during many generations.

On basis of the table below it`s possible to confirm/deny affiliation by the blood group of a child. Inheritance of a blood group and inheritance of Rhesus factor are independent form each other. If each parent has Rhesus positive then a child will have only Rhesus positive. If they both have Rhesus negative then a child will more often inherit Rhesus negative. And if one of them has Rhesus negative and another one Rhesus positive, then child`s Rhesus factor should be treated as 50%x50%

There is a necessity of accurate dating of pregnancy in medical practice. It`s generally accepted to count pregnancy duration in weeks. It is the most precise measuring, which makes it possible to define the most important phases of fetal development.
